Period cups - be ready.
I love menstrual cups as they allow me to always be ready for my period. About 7 years ago, I had used diva period cups, but somehow fell out use with them. They ended up getting tossed last time I did a major house cleaning. Since that time I’ve discovered that there are now quite a few menstrual cups available. How fabulous is that? Plus there’s a whole new world of information on the internet about how to prepared and be ready for your dreaded period as well as choose a menstrual cup that best suits you. After perusing Period cup FAQ’s, reviews, video clips (including how to insert menstrual cups, remove, clean, find the right one for your shape, attain proper placement/suction…. even about use for swimming, running & yoga postures) I chose Luna menstrual cups for my period. I compared several period cups on-line & this one stood out. I’ll also mention that I learned a simple technique for measuring the height of my cervix (basically with the index finger) which also helped in the decision-making process. (I highly recommend youtube videos by a self-aware 19-year-old Sarah. She's a gifted communicator on this & much more.) There’s so much to love about this period cup—only upsides, no downsides. I tried it out right away (to make sure it fit—in the shower) & unexpectedly fell in love with it immediately. I learned techniques on-line about easy ways to insert & remove it. Essentially it’s helpful to know that there’s 3 options on how to fold it before inserting—C-fold, triangle fold & pop-down fold. The pop-down fold works best for me. The cup popped open easily after I rotated it a time or two once it was fully inserted. The proper suction (which I verified by gently pulling the stem) was easy to attain. Menstrual cup removal was a breeze by gently squeezing the base of the cup to disengage the suction. I then gently shimmied it out. Although this was a “test run,” I am confident that had the menstrual cup been full, the contents would *not* have spilled out upon removal. I suspect even though I would prefer not to empty this in a public restroom, if I had to, I could without incident. This menstrual cup is a win-win-win-win! My husband listened patiently while I went on & on & on about menstrual cups :-) It’s beautifully designed, comfortable, fits well plus it’s good for your wellbeing & the wellbeing of the planet (unlike tampons). In addition, it allows you be connected with your body. In other words, you gain understanding about the nature & variability of your cycle--its flow, viscosity, color, amount, etc. In the world of wholistic health & eastern medicine, this is considered invaluable information. The cup is hygienic (easy to clean), durable, reliable & comfortable. I suspect it will also help reduce my menstrual cramps. I’m actually looking forward to my next period (something I used to dread)! I once read that the average woman spends 8 years of her life menstruating. My only regret is not discovering the Luna period cup sooner. I’m approaching menopause age & am glad I'll have this to usher in the remainder of my periods. (Another bonus is how easy this is to use if your period arrives at inconvenient or unpredictable times.) As a side note, I’ve found that switching to a whole foods, plant-based diet has been immensely helpful in alleviating issues with my period. I highly recommended Dr. Tabitha Scott’s book “The Green Period Solution.” It changed my life. Apparently in many cases it also eliminates issues with menopause as well. It’s nice to embrace and be ready, appreciate & make friends with my periods after all these years! Very best wishes to all of you!
